Post Harvest Management Course

Dalhousie Agricultural Campus’ Extended Learning Unit (formerly the Centre for Continuing & Distance Education) has added a course on Post Harvest Management for fresh produce to their Learn2Farm suite of courses.

This course will be held at the Kentville Agriculture Centre from November 7-9, will be taught by Dr. Sam Asiedu, and costs $385 + HST.

Minimizing post harvest losses can increase profits for producers and retailers and can result in the delivery of better quality and safer produce to the consumer.

This new course is designed to provide you, the new and seasoned farmer, as well as processors and distributors, with knowledge about the principles of postharvest management and specific practices for a variety of fresh produce commodities produced in the Atlantic Region. Crop groups covered will include leafy vegetables, roots and tubers, stem vegetables, tree fruits and small fruits.

Through classroom presentations, discussions, and tours you gain valuable insight into:

  • Causes of Postharvest Losses
  • Harvesting Systems: Maturity and Maturity Indices
  • Cooling Prior to Shipment and Storage
  • Preparing Produce for the Fresh Market
  • Transport
  • Sanitation
  • Postharvest Handling Systems for Selected Crops
  • Marketing of Fresh Produce
